2026 Project Update

Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage 2026 Project Update

The Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage (AHS) Project is a proposed hydrogen storage facility in the Humber. AHS is essential to balance supply and demand between producers and users, unlock the wider UK hydrogen economy and underpin decarbonisation for the Humber region.

Together, Equinor and SSE Thermal have been developing the project over a number of years. We are grateful to everyone that has participated in our engagement activities over this time and shared their thoughts and feedback. Alongside our own assessments has led us to refine our designs and the way we plan to construct and operate the project.

Project updates

Since our statutory consultation in Summer 2024, we have continued to review the project and have made several small but important refinements. These include changes to what was previously shared, with a focus on safety, environmental protection, and practical delivery.

To read more about these changes, you can access our 2026 AHS Community Update document

In summary, these changes include:

  • Refined construction approach and methods for creating caverns and installing pipelines

  • Changes to the layout and heights of some buildings and infrastructure, including a new vent stack

  • Improvements to our drainage strategy

  • Revised plans for accessing the beach

  • Adjustments to anticipated traffic volumes and development of our traffic management plan

More information about these changes can be accessed below.

Next steps

We expect to submit our application for consent in Spring 2026 to the Planning Inspectorate.

This application will include a project description, Environmental Statement and other documents including a Consultation Report. These documents will set out how our consultation activities and feedback from stakeholders has been used to develop our plans.

If our application is approved, construction could begin in the late 2020s. We plan to be operational within the early 2030s.

You can keep up to date on our progress through this website.
